Human beings thrive on connection. It enhances our physical and mental well-being and creates a sense of belonging. When we connect with others, we uplift those around us and enrich our own lives, finding fulfillment in shared experiences and collective impact.
For those of us fortunate enough to be part of the co-operative sector, connecting with the community is one of our core principles. It’s what makes us special and sets us apart from other types of businesses. Creating meaningful ways for co-op members, staff, board directors, and leaders to partner with the community for the betterment of all does more than just tick a box on your corporate strategy. Building relationships and working together to make a difference in our communities gives us purpose, brings us joy, and reminds us that we are part of something bigger.
It doesn’t matter if your co-operative has the resources to roll out a big corporate initiative or if you’re a smaller co-op working with fewer financial and human resources—every effort makes a difference. The important thing is to get your team involved in shaping and running these initiatives. When people feel connected to the work they’re doing and see the positive impact it has on others, it’s not just rewarding—it’s inspiring. Plus, it strengthens the relationships between your co-operative and the community you’re helping.
Think about the incredible value of showing up for your community. Too often, we assume that making a positive impact requires financial support—but there are so many other ways to make a difference. Do you have meeting space that local non-profits could use? Could your staff or members volunteer their time or expertise? What about helping to spotlight other co-operatives or small businesses in your area? Simple initiatives like hosting a clothing drive, collecting items for the local food bank, or teaming up with local artists and artisans can make a real difference without straining your resources.
And don’t forget about your fellow co-ops—big or small. Collaboration is powerful, and when we come together, we can achieve so much more. By finding creative ways to work within your capacity while contributing meaningfully, you not only strengthen your community but also experience the joy and connection that comes from making a positive impact.
Let's embrace the power of connection and make our communities stronger, together.
