As part of its commitment to co-operative principles including education and training and co-operation amongst co-operatives, OCA in partnership with Gay Lea Foods Co-operative, is offering a one day governance training module. Based on its award winning Leadership in Governance Training Program, the module will be interactive, focus on issues that reflect the real-life experiences of directors and boards. The module is one day in duration and will be facilitated by leading co-operative governance experts.



Who this session is designed for:

Directors and management with a responsibility for governance of small and medium-sized co-operatives as well as newly incorporated co-operatives.

What are the key learning objectives:

This module will equip participants with the understanding and ability to:

  • Make an effective contribution to board and business performance
  • Recognize the role, responsibilities and purpose of management, directors and the board
  • Appreciate the features of the board’s governance role
  • Fulfill their obligations under the major laws and regulations applying to Canada including the duties and liabilities of individual directors and the board

  • Opportunity to network and learn from the broad range of experiences of other participants;
  • Build a network of fellow directors and managers from different backgrounds and organizations;

Lead Trainers

Michael Barrett, President and CEO, Gay Lea Foods Co-operative 

Michael Barrett is the President & CEO of the largest dairy co-operative in the province of Ontario. He has been with Gay Lea Foods for almost two decades. Michael has served in many different roles within Gay Lea Foods and also serves his community as a School Trustee and Chair for the Durham District School Board for the city of Oshawa. In his spare time, besides helping to parent his now grown family of six children and grand parenting six, Michael likes to play with his big boy toys” (his old cars) and spends any time that he has left enjoying his farm located in the rolling hills of Selwyn Township.

Quintin Fox, Director, Training Development and Capacity Resourcing, Gay Lea Foods Co-operative 

Quintin works with the Human Resources and Member Relations departments to develop training and development programs to meet the needs of members, delegates, directors and employees. He is responsible for the development and delivery of the award-winning Leadership in Governance director and delegate training program. Since joining Gay Lea Foods in 2012, he has overseen the development of the Lighthouse Program – a program which is developing the next generation of leaders at all levels of the co-operative. Quintin has 20 years’ experience working for membership-based organizations in pivotal roles with a focus on education and training, research and governance. Prior to emigrating to Canada, he was Head of Consultancy and Training at the UK-based educational charity, the Plunkett Foundation. In 2014, Quintin was recognized for his work with the Foundation and became a Fellow of the Plunkett Foundation. He is a graduate of the University of London, UK.
